PULLING OF HAIR OR BODY HAIR

image

Trichotillomania is a disorder characterized by hair pulling resulting in significant hair loss. Trichotillomania occurs more frequently in women.

For some patients, this activity is fairly automatic (i.e. without the complete awareness of the person); others are more aware of the fact. Hair pulling is not triggered by obsessions or concerns about appearance (as in body dysmorphic disorder), but may be preceded by a feeling of tension or anxiety that is relieved by hair pulling, which is often followed by a feeling of satisfaction.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do we pull our hair ?
Trichotillomania is a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Trichotillomaniacs pull out or pluck their hair for reasons that are not cosmetic. In other words, they do not pull out their hair to improve their appearance.
Does hair grow back after being pulled out ?
If enough hair has been torn out, significant regrowth occurs in response to this cellular injury. Otherwise, nothing happens. This is a process of intercellular communication called “quorum sensing”.
